A cottage industry is an industry where the creation of products is home based, rather than factory based. Products created by cottage industries are often unique and distinctive given the fact that they are not usually mass produced. Cottage Industry as an industry and therefore the people who work in this field can suffer when trying to compete with much larger factory based companies.
 
At Samsara when we talk of cottage industries we are often referring to those in Indonesia. Indonesia remains as a country without unemployment benefits or pensions. People rely on their traditional craft techniques passed down through generations to create a product to sell in order to create an income.
 
Cottage industries across the globe preserve some of the ancient craftsmanship that is fast becoming a rare and dying art in many of these communities. One example of a product that is born from cottage industries is our Raku Pottery.
 
The end result is that we are able to purchase these beautiful handcrafted products and make available to our customers. In doing so we are supporting whole communities, and aid in the support of local schools, hospitals, temples and mosques. It is then up to us to educate our customers about the beauty of these handmade artefacts.
